Gunnar Barera Orange, CA - PATH projects KREW
My name is Gunnar. I live in Orange County, CA. I began running in 2009/2010 as a casual runner with no particular goal in mind. I ran a few days a week and little by little I started to get better, faster, and would run farther. In 2016 I joined a local running group- OC Craft Runners. From there I began to take running a little more seriously. I ran my first 5k and Half Marathon within the first year of joining the club. I was always into running on trails and from time to time I would run thru trails near by. However, in 2017 I joined another local trail running group who meets at Crystal Cove in Newport, CA. My running journey took off and my mileage began to increase. I ran a few trail races but nothing in the ultra category. Recently I was lucky enough to run the 2020 LA Marathon, which at that point was my furthest distance and just a few weeks ago did R2R2R (recap here). I guess when you hang out with a bunch of ultra runners you end up joining in on their adventures. I'm hoping to get more into and focus on more ultra distances. It really is an awesome experience. Excited to be part of the KREW! Super lucky to be part of a group of such awesome runners.
Running accomplishment(s) you are proud of
My most recent journey running R2R2R. This was my furthest run to date. With 18 hours and 40 plus miles in the Grand Canyon it was one of the most memorable things I have done. It was fun and challenging. Having friends there to help each other push through the tough times and laugh through to good times made it that much better.

Your favorite PATH projects gear?
The Graves PX 7" shorts- In addition to being an excellent workhorse for running. I also use this short when I'm not running. The pockets are perfect! I'm able to store my phone, wallet, keys, and miscellaneous items. The best part is that they're all safe and secure with the zippers. The perfect short for running and daily activates. Matching it with a Cascade shirt you'll always be ready to go for a run no matter where you are. It's even great if you're at work on a casual day. The Muir Cap is also amazing. Super comfortable and doesn't feel like it's on your head. I've used it for many running adventures.
What do you enjoy about running?
No matter what is going on with my life it's a perfect way to unplug, reflect, and forget about everything for that one moment. Getting that feeling of being free. One thing that keeps me going is seeing the progress of putting in the work. Pushing myself to new limits and seeing that I'm capable of whatever I put my mind and body to is incredible. I really enjoy running with friends. So much that the night before any big effort it's hard for me to sleep!Advice for runners looking to improve?
Be consistent, enjoy yourself, never give up.
Advice for runners looking to improve?
Don't focus on time. Go out and have fun! Increase your mileage in small increments. The body and mind will take care of the rest. Once you start to put in the work everything will fall into place.
