We just came back from 4 days of running, cheering and meeting with friends in Chicago. The marathon weekend was in full effect with many running activities.
We met up with the Ten Junk Miles podcast to eat the best deep-dish pizza in town and to record a group show. We had a long conversation about how Path Projects started, things we have learned in the past 2 years, upcoming products and much more. Episode link to follow next month.
With Scott Kummer, Holly Lindroth and Adam Benkers in the Ten Junk Miles studio.
After visiting the marathon expo, we went for a running tour of downtown Chicago. The rain and wind was coming down in full force and gave us a glimpse of fall running in the Midwest.
On Saturday morning, we set up a marathon shake out run with friends from Path Projects, Ten Junk Miles and Extramilest. Great to meet runners from all over the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. We ran by the water front and talked marathon training and racing strategies.
On Sunday we cheered on more than 40,000 marathoners at mile 24 on Michigan Ave. Very exciting to see the elite runners flying by so fast and smooth.
Incredible to watch Brigid Kosgei set a new women's world record in 2:14:04
Coach Morgan from The Run Experience hosted a 2 hour live web cast from mile 24, while everyone cheered on the runners.

Slow down. Base miles are slower and easier than you think. One speed or power workout per week and the rest slow and easy.
Forget about the numbers and just run.
Make time for foam rolling and massages. Keeping those muscle fibers smooth and free from knots will make your daily runs better, as well as preventing injuries.
Listen to your body and what it is telling you. If it hurts, stop and change your plan,. If your tired, get more sleep etc.
If you want to get better, relax and have fun! If you’re not enjoying your running and having fun you are kind of missing the point!
Focus on enjoying your running. Find routes and trails that you enjoy being on more than overly focusing on statistics, data and overall mileage.
Consistency is key.
Go slower on easy days and faster on hard days. Don’t always run at the same pace.
Stay healthy and keep the passion in your training, running is supposed to be fun and bring joy, not a means to an end.
Be patient with your running journey. Don’t add mileage and speed too fast to your training. The only thing you will accomplish fast is a fast track to injuries. Build a solid foundation by building up slowly
My advice is that not every race is going to be great and go your way. You will have some great races, runs and you will have some bad races and runs. Just hang in there and enjoy running and the process.
Not only is having the right gear fun, it will save you a lot of agony out on the trail!
Run hard hill repeats almost every week. That build strong leg muscles
Let go of ego. Have a plan A, B, C, & D in terms of racing AND training. Life is precious so take care of yourself so you can enjoy running as long as possible!
Do more easy running…like VERY easy. Let your heart rate govern the pace for all runes except for the one a week that is intended to be a hard effort by following the MAF method.
Smile and enjoy the process. After all, it’s just running.
